Makan Trail (Exam Stress Relief)

Hey AIESEC!

Is exam stress getting to you? Why not take a break and recharge yourself? Maybe can talk to the alumnis to relieve stress.

Dear Friends,

Make a date for - Wednesday 21 November 2007 @ 7:30pm
Head down to – Lau Pa Sat @ Raffles Place (Raffles Place MRT)

About the place:
Lau Pa Sat is big food court located right in the heart of Singapore's Central Business District. It was a wet market before it was being renovated restored as a favourite makan (eating) place amongst locals and tourists alike; serving up local delights.

During the day, there's nothing really special with this food court. However, come night fall, the places transforms when a stretch of road (Boon Tat Street) south of the food court is closed to traffic, and tables and chairs laid out for all the food(ies) that come hither . Enjoy great ambience under the stars (provided it's not raining), along this little stretch sandwiched between office towers.

Satay (meat skewers) is their anchor menu. There’s an entire street dedicated to satay! You can have chicken satay, beef satay, mutton satay, and even duck satay, including the peanut souce, at 50 cents per stick. They also sell the lontong (rice cake) at $1 per portion. For those not so keen on being carnivores, they also serve a variety of BBQ seafood, such as mussels, stingrays, etc.

· Trivia: The Good satay is …
· Tender and moist
· Decent sized chunks of meat
· Engulfed in a rich marinade that penetrates into the meat
· Meat that slides off the skewer without taking out your teeth
· Charcoal grilled to perfection
· Accompanied with a tasty peanut gravy that is neither too oily nor watery
· Topped off with fresh onion and cucumber

Finally…

Good food is all the more delicious in good company. Looking forward to seeing you! Please do let us know if you wish for us to arrange someone to meet you at Raffles Place MRT and head down together.

RSVP by Tuesday 20 Nov 07: To confirm your attendance,
please email Tanya_sng@hotmail.com or sms me at +6596786548

Finally, I made up my mind

Finally, I made up my mind.
After months of consideration, I made the final decision at 2:30am, Nov. 11th, 2007.
I decided to run for LCP for AIESEC NTU next year!

The first person that I wanted to announce the decision to was Alvin. I can’t help sending a message to him right after that:
“Hey, Alvin!
I m running for LCP for AIESEC NTU next year!
--WWF”

It took me great courage to make this decision. My mind was filled with fear. If I am the LCP, I would have to spend most of my time in AIESEC; If I am the LCP, I would be challenged with a lot of questions; If I am the LCP, I would have to take care of different departments, more than 20 senior members, 60 newbies, and alumni, trainees…; If I am the LCP, can I bring AIESEC NTU to a higher level? …

However, three things inspire and encourage me:

1. Heroes Conference 2007
I remember that there was such a question in the conference, "When do you feel proud of AIESEC?"
I really think over this question during the conference. Finally, I have my answer: I feel proud of AIESEC,
- when we, delegates from different countries and territories, gather together in a room sharing ideas on AIESEC and doing matching;
- when each of us made commitment in front of all the rest (The commitment that I made was to work together with my teammates to bring AIESEC Singapore to a higher level);
- when Wan Xin, Grace and Xin Min showed great concern over AIESEC Singapore and shared what we can bring back passionately during the conference feedback meeting every night;
- when we have the AIESEC roll call (Hong Kong one and the Australia one);
- when we have the AIESEC square dance (especially the Malaysia one -- Mr. Q);
- when we use the AIESEC language (who can understand “our LCVPICX was in NLDS” if you are not from AIESEC);
- when we exchange AIESEC T-shirts (I like the Indonesia one – “I love AIESEC”);
- when we watch the AIESEC videos (http://aiesecvideos.com );

AIESEC is more than an organization. It is a great culture for the youth! I feel proud to be an AIESECer.

2. Alvin (LCP of AIESEC NTU 0708)
I met him in Library 2 on Friday. His face was full of joy, as usual. “Hey, Wenfeng, let me show you something”, he said excitedly.
Then he passed me two pieces of paper. It was about the news from AI that Singapore is in the list of 18 countries receiving fund from Standard Charter Bank in the 1st year. I can feel his excitement in mind when we read the paper together.

He contributed a lot to AIESEC NTU and set a very good model for us, by action.
He inspires me all the way from the application of EB (I missed the deadline and was demotivated at that time, but he extended the deadline and encouraged me to apply for it), to the reception of the U.S. trainee, to the EYLN Conference 2007 (He encouraged me to be the chief delegate), to the application of Jump Start 2007 OC, to the first EB meeting, to the reception of the Taiwanese AIESECers, to the birthday party held for me in AMD, to the EB meeting in Oct., to the preparation of EVOLVE conference 2008…He impressed me in an AIESEC way, setting a model, providing opportunities, offering help and showing concern.
I challenged him with severe questions when he encouraged us to run for MC or LCP, but he answered my questions and explained it in patient.

As Sharon often says, you never know how amazing it will be if you make a difference in other’s life!
I could say, Alvin really makes a difference in my life, by action.

3. Jolin (LCP of AIESEC FDU 0607, MC VP OGX AIESEC Mainland of China 0708)
Every one of her articles is inspiring to me! I can feel my blood flowing hot in my body when I read it!
She shows me the spirit in AIESEC Mainland of China, opening one more window for me to see AIESEC! Originally, I get to know that some AIESECers in Mainland of China are really crazy about AIESEC, such as Grace Yuan (CEEDer from UIBE), Ivy Wang (she is running for LCP in AIESEC Hangzhou next year) and Elaine Zhang (who I met in Heroes). However, it was not until I read her words that I got into the mind of a passionate AIESECer! She implanted her understanding of AIESEC into her words. She shared her stories from an AIESEC member to LCP and then MC. I was touched by her courage of pursuing excellence and sapiential understanding of AIESEC.

Janne, the chair of Heroes conference 2007, said, you would get great and mysterious power if you make a commitment in front of a group of people. Therefore, I summon up courage to announce my willingness to run for LCP here.

I am feeling brave now. We have Alvin as a very good model; We have excellent new members this year; We have two brothers on this island; We have AP family around us...

Sometimes, we have to be brave to take the challenge. Let’s bury the fear. We are not alone to fight against the fear, because we are in AIESEC family!

RIPPLES INTERNATIONAL CONFERNCE 2008

Proudly presented by AIESEC-LC-HKU

HeyAIESEC!!!

Greetings from Roxanne, the Organizing Committee President of the Ripples International Conference 2008, which will be held in Hong Kong during January 11 – 15, 2008. In this email, I would like to invite you to come to this conference and to explore potential cooperation between your LC and AIESEC-LC-HKU.

Introduction to Ripples

First launched in January 2007, the Ripples International Conference is an issue-based international conference organized by AIESEC-LC-HKU. In the coming Ripples International Conference 2008, it is decided that Corporate Social Responsibility will be the primary theme. In the conference, we wish to provide the general picture of the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility, followed by going into in-depth discussion

of several prominent issue foci, which may include Environment Protection, Medicine Patent, Diversity and Inclusiveness, Responsible Investment, etc.

Cooperation Opportunities

A successful international conference requires the synergy effect from the diversity of the delegation, which we wish to achieve through utilizing AIESEC's global network. Yet, on top of the diversity of the delegation, it would be at least equally important that this diversity is extended to the Organizing Committee. It is under such considerations that we would like to invite you to join us in this endeavor.

Your Role in the Conference

We understand that Corporate Social Responsibility is a broad issue and in order to enhance the quality of the delegates' learning in the conference, it would be crucial that we identify several issue foci. Given that different countries have different CSR local realities, we are cordially inviting different LCs to in charge of different issue foci; namely, Environment Protection, Medicine Patent, Diversity and Inclusiveness, Responsible Investment.

It would be good if you can communicate with the Executive Board of your LC to further explore potential cooperation opportunities including Issue Based Projects or Issue Based Exchanges. Or, if you have already got a particular CSR focus in mind, you are more than welcome to send me a draft proposal on how you can integrate it to the conference. For any questions, please contact me by email at roxanneman.aiesec@gmail.com.

Thanks!

Look forward to meeting you in Ripples! =)
