Preparation Seminar Day 2

So sorry for the late posting....been trying to get the pics ^^'

AIESEC Preparation Seminar 2007 (2nd Day, 4th March 2007)

“Hey AIESEC!” “What’s up?” – a typical AIESEC kick-start of the day as all candidates who passes the AIESEC Student Review Board (SRB) gathered again to unveil the programmes installed for them on the second day of AIESEC Preparation Seminar 2007.

“Yesterday was very enriching as the speakers were very experienced and knowledgeable,” said one of the candidates who came for the previous day event. In contrast, the second day’s programmes were more informal and interactive where the passive absorbing and scribbling of notes could be left behind. This was to encourage the candidates whose status has now become AIESEC student nominee (SN) to share their opinions, experience and learn how to manage cultural diversity in a positive way, so that these outgoing interns will lay a foundation of mental and emotional preparation before embarking on their internships abroad. The seminar was broken down into two main groups, one was for the mainstream internship, whilst another was specifically for the MAD (Make A Difference) project.

The agenda began with some serious stuff as one of our experienced AIESEC alumni explained the way to access AIESEC.net database for matching of companies and interns, which is known as the Insight XP. Student nominees will get to browse through all the data of AIESEC exchange partnership companies from 95 countries and territories. Personal expectation and flexibility becomes a vital key of successful match realisation.

Then we sat in a few groups that consisted of different nationalities to discuss on the question: How do you represent Singapore in a foreign country?
“ Bring kaya, Singlish or relate them to Singapore brands like SIA, Creative etc. for those foreigners do not know anything about Singapore” suggested by one of the candidates.
“I think we should bring milo-dinosour and newater…” the crowd broke into a laugh. If it’s you, what do you think? Or what will you bring?

Around 11am, the crowd was divided into two groups for cultural simulation as the facilitators approached the topic of Intercultural Communication. In the groups they were separated into 3 parties of distinct culture backgrounds that have to meet, negotiate and close a deal on building a new hotel. They were the Hotel management team, Bank and Construction team. After reading through the cultural background given, each team had to display its assigned culture during the meeting and try to reach an agreement. The candidates were having fun, and they found it amusing to adapt to the cultures given which restricted them from expressing themselves in various ways. A round of evaluation and wrap up was conducted to help the participants to understand the aim of the simulations of not to judge the difference of diverse culture and be open to integrate into the culture they are heading to.

Coming back from the simulations, 5 hot topics were thrown to the candidates for them to participate in AIESEC learning circles. They were given the choice to join the facilitators group on topic based such as: Pornography, Foreign workers (maids), Racism, Single mother do not enjoy the same benefit married mother, Casinos and gambling. Discussion and spreading of individual opinion were strongly encouraged as AIESEC opens for diversity and expressing of individual point of view. These may seem to be serious topic yet they enjoyed the jokes and funny experiences shared during discussion and some even continued during lunch break.

The next program in line after lunch combined the group form MAD project and mainstream internship candidates. The slight recap of six AIESEC values brings the candidates into self-reflection on the whole exchange and internship process. This is purposed to let the candidates pave their own way in this internship programme because ultimately “it’s up to you.” Nevertheless, the programme continued with a humorous skit: The Sinbad Story served to evaluate how you, as an individual, stereotype others. This is vital for preparing the candidates to the countries they will be going, immersing in the new cultures, and yet preserving candidates’ own identity.

“World Idol” brought the atmosphere to another level of euphoria and excitement. During this session, the candidates were divided into several country groups, namely China, India, Romania, Bahrain, UK, Ivory Coast and so on. Thereafter, each group was instructed to come out with a performance to represent its assigned country. Also, this “competition” was never complete without the 3 pseudo-American-Idol judges, namely Randy, Paula and Simon.

The last session of the day was “AIESEC TIME”. The candidates were blown away with a brilliant sharing session by Dei (LCP of AIESEC NTU 0506) about his AIESEC experience, including the countries that he travelled to and the conferences that he attended previously.

Preparation Seminar 2007 may have come to an end, but it never stops here. Nonetheless, it is a symbol of the beginning of another chapter in the outgoing interns’ life – AIESEC Traineeship abroad. Themed “Voyage of Discovery”, Prep Sem 2007 served as a platform for these young people to gather their momentum and get themselves empowered to face their upcoming overseas experience.

Lunch with the Profs

A special invitation was sent by our dear Professor to the Marketing workshop Organizing Committee. So, this afternoon we were all set and took a 2-hour break from all school work, studies, projects, etc and went for the treat.

Ten people, two cars, two allies, five nationalities and various dishes were present. From Char Koay Teow to Curry Chicken. From Chicken Satay to Ice Chendol. From San Mee to Cod Fish. It was a day of indulgence, and I failed to strictly follow the 'waist-loss' programme. At least for today. Eh..maybe tomorrow also...

See the plates?

It was at Singapore Yacht Club with beautiful view of the yachts, the oil tankers accompanied by warm breeze. The conversation's topics ranged from food (Penang vs. Indonesia vs. Singapore vs. The best Makan Place in Singapore), diversity, business to the yachts. It was great to learn that our dearest Teacher Advisor, Prof Hooi also made the extra mile to know each and everyone's name, nationality and course of study. As Prof Wan puts it, "He is a fatherly figure'. Indeed...

But that's not the end, the OC surprised me when Grace handed me a bookmark with black/red lingeries image on it and a card with their messages. I'm so touched :) Thanks much all. It really does make the journey even more worth while. So, Alvin...JIA YOU ya!

So sweeeettttt *hiks hiks....srooottt!

ps: You all (everyone..each and everyone in AIESEC in NTU), with this I'd like to send my sincere gratitude and support for your journey.
So, mina-san Arigatou Gozaimasu! Gambarimasyou ne!

Hugz,
Diana

Ryan's visit to NTU

Indeed, the Wed that just pass was definitely an enriching day when the Ryan Director for Asia Pacific from AIESEC International dropped by LC NTU to share with us his experience and journey in AIESEC. Through the conversation with him, we somehow had a better idea what goes on in AI - some trivial,

  • they had a rotation cooking team for each day
  • there are 22 people in the team from 17 countries; can't beat that for diversity,
  • working hours are usually 9am - 6pm or 10am - 7pm but our dear AP Director was there from 8am - 7pm since he needs to communicate with people in AP but the time difference made it difficult

Ryan's journey in AIESEC has been far from smooth sailing from day 1, he had lost in many elections as well as encountered many challenges along the way. One of the most dramatic that I could recall is when he finally became MCP for NZ (btw, he lost his first election - see, the virtue of persistence) , the NZ MC was at the brink of bankruptcy due to some financial issues. despite that, he managed to get the NZ MC to be one of the richest MC of all time during his term.

Hmm, I'm not really sure what are the strategies that he used in the MC, think its time to send him an e-mail.Another drama like situation was when he transfer over to another LC - literally by requesting to transfer to another University, look at that level of commitment - to help the LC in its management. That LC had about 25 members but it had been quite inactive, raising minimal number of TNs and SNs and was on the verge of losing its membership. Ryan ran for the LCP position.

During the election speech he mentioned about being very tough on the members if he was to get elected, which he did and first thing he did was to shook up members, issuing an ultimatum - start working for the LC or quit from it. He explained to us that it is harsh, but he wants to waste nobody's time, which I fully agree, why stay if you aren't committed to the cause. Three members remained, but they fought hard bringing the LC to one of its highest time and revived the people's interest in the Uni to join the LC.

During the ininteractive sessions, one most valuable lesson that I had learn is value of persistence; to work hard for your dream, to know that the journey towards that end will be tough but to carry on anyway. The path that Ryan had took to reach where he is now, isn't a simple flat road with nice scenery along the way, but it really is a roller-coaster journey. And will continue to be as long as he working towards his goal.

Through the journey where the ups is like the thrill of viewing the joys of your labour and the downs is like each passing day is like a lifetime - it has definitely imbue a strong character and leadership abilities in Ryan; just like a fulfillment of AIESEC's motto, the fulfillment of human potential.

To sum up, definitely, all Ryan had achieved made me felt jealous as well as inspired, he was 3 years younger than me yet he had achieved so much more. However, I believe that I too can make an impact like him by making each day an improvement over the previous - after all the road to excellence ends when you stop taking action. ;)

Are you inspired by Ryan as well? Well then, make a commitment and join us in the journey to pursue excellence ;)

Finance Workshop

The Finance workshop – Unleash the Investor in You – was organized by the AIESEC Finance Department at NUS Business School from 9 am to 12 pm. The objective of the workshop was to impart some basic knowledge about investing and providing a start off point for those uninitiated in finance. The workshop began with a short introduction speech by Sherina, MCVP Finance, and was followed by Ivy, who talked about the Stock terminology, since the focus of the workshop was stocks and funds. This section was really useful, since most of us do not have any background in finance.

The external speakers were Lee Xin Hong and Joel Boh from SMU EyE, the SMU Investment club. Xin Hong explained the concept of risk and Business- Like investing, factors that we should take into account while deciding which stocks to buy such as – products of the company, debts and whether the company has any competitive advantage or not. He also explained about valuation of stocks and margin of safety by using the example of Food Empire.

Xin Hong and Joel from SMU

Joel talked about different types of asset classes – stocks, bonds, real estate, options, derivatives, commodities etc. and focused on Index Funds (e.g. STI, S&P 500, MSCI etc.) and why index funds are a better to invest in than mutual funds especially for novice investors. He also stressed that it is important to start investing young, since compounding increases the wealth in the long run.

Finally, Sharon talked about how we can link all this to AIESEC. This is just a starting point, and we should follow up on this by doing learning circles, PBoXes, making this workshop an annual event, having an international finance workshop etc. AIESEC has a finance learning network, and we can learn more about it by joining the Global Learning Networks Community on aiesec.net. A lot of information and resources are available on the community.

The OC, minus Imran and adds Su Sheng ^.0

On the whole, the speakers, OC, and the audience did a good job in making this event a success! And a big round of applause goes out to the Finance dept for taking an initiative to organize such an event for the first time.

Summary:

  • Keep the long term benefits in mind while investing.
  • Do your research before buying a stock.
  • Buy the stock not depending on the market, but on the business.
  • Market fluctuations do not mean you will go bankrupt.
  • Index Funds are good for us and we should start investing ASAP to benefit from the power of compounding and higher returns.
  • And of course, make the maximum use of this opportunity and link all this back to AIESEC in various ways!

The rocking NTU @ers...and Imran always wants to join us *wakakaka
